MIAMI BEACH, Fla. , Fob. 00 -- Regatta royalty is
dusting off its ermine for the court sessions of the winter
season. Out in the blue-green waters of Biscayne Bay, the
spocdstcrs already are warming up for the Miami Beach mid-winter
regatta, March 16 and 17.
Gar Wood of Dctroit1 daddy of all the speed kings, is
here with five entries, including his Miss America V, which he
hopes to drive to a new salt water world speed record. Mrs .
Grace Connors of Buffalo will pilot her Miss Okeechobee, a
displacement boat capable of close to a mile a minute.
J. H. Rand, Jr. , of New York will bring his Spitfire V,
champion of the 151 cubic inch hydroplane class , and three fast
Cuban boats, never before raced in American waters , have been
entered.
In addition,'•ftho largest collection of outboardtaspecd-
stars, the peppery and noisy class that has grown up in the last
three years, will meet to battle; again
for the magnificent
jlg ic,cnt
Col. E. H. R. Green cup, a solid silver trophy standing more
than three foot high. It was the Colonel Green cup -- the
Star Island trophy -- that gave the first impetus to outboard
racing, which has grown to be the lively feature of every power-
boat moot,
Gar Woodts heart is sot on yet another speed record and
so will send Miss America V out to shave time off her salt water
record, established at the Miami Beach regatta last year, a
shade better than 80 miles an hour.
J. H. Rand 's entry of Spitfire V adds interest to the
151 inoh class , whioh also will include Sparrow, a now 151 inch
hydroplane built for Elmer H. Johnson of Bennington, Vt.
Spitfire V, winner of the Duke of York trophy in England last
summer, was driven by Ralph Snoddyto
now mile records for
this class in the Albany, N. Y. regatta. She made one mile
at the sped of 64.286 miles an hour and averaged 62.882 in six
mile hcata. Miss Miriam H. Rand, daughter of the capitalist,
has entered the fast little boat and Snoddy probably will drive
it,

TaAlaZ BEI\CH, FLA.---Take ten speed water boats, add ten automobile racing drivers,
r:ho have travelled faster on surfaces than any other humans dump them all into
Biscayne Bay, fire a "go'" pistol, and you have a thumb nail sketch of what is go-
ing to happen here March 20 and 21, when ,ten (10> of America' s most famous auto
racing stars will pilot ten speed boats, identically -:o-}ered with motors
.ore closely related than twins, and ballasted to na.to up the difference in the
weights of the drivers and the shrinkage of the wooden boat hulls.
It is a brand new idea thought up by the agile mind of 0JLL G. PISIIEti
world famous sportsman, who plans events e tra.ordinary for the wealthy folk who
follow the migratory birds to the modern garden of Eden where summer spends its
winter..
Everything in the boats vill be e:actly aline and there won' t be a s'plinter' s
difference in them when they chug-o:u'.g to the tape. ::very swipe of the Painter' S
brush will be counted, as paint is daubed on the hulls.
For the first time in at least the modern history of the world, a race will
be staged in which every competitor wi__i be on an ecual material footing when
they face the starter.
The human equation 14l:1 be the only margin of difference. It will be a.
difference in driving sl:i11, nerve and daring. itreerienee vont count because
none of the drivers will ever have tromped on the accelerator of a water beat
before the Biscayne Bay Regatta.
The drivers will be selected from among the stars v:ho have competed in the
International 500-mile races held over the historic course of the Indianapolis-
Motor Speedway.
The choice of drivers will scan be made by officials and immediately
announced.
