Resolution 4520 RESOLUTION NO. 4520
WHEREAS, an association co riposed of Miami Beach citizens
has been formed recently for the purpose of securing a desirable
site and the erection thereon of a non-sectarian, non-profit,
community hospital , and
WHEREAS, there is at present an insufficient number of
hospital beds and facilities within the City of Miami Beach,
this being particularly true of the thickly populated district
in Miami Beach south of 23rd Street, and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach now has a permanent popu-
lation of more than 18,000 people, which population is increased
during the winter season by about 75,000 additional people, with
an estimated average population throughout the year of approxi-
mately 50,000 people, and
WHEREAS, the authoritative number of hospital beds is five
to every one thousand persons, while at the present time the
total number of hospital beds in Miami Beach is one hundred fifty,
being only three to every one thousand persons, and
WHEREAS, on account of the healthful and salubrious climate
of Miami Beach, there are attracted each year many thousands of
visitors who are in poor health, thus resulting in increased de-
mands for hospital facilities, and
WHEREAS, during the past ten years the approximate amount
of new construction in Miami Beach has been the sum of $80,000,000. ,
and that the increase of hospital facilities has fallen far short
of keeping up any proportionate pace, and
WHEREAS, forty-eight out of the fifty-five physicians and
surgeons practicing and living in Miami Beach, have heartily en-
dorsed the need for another hospital and the plans now under con-
sideration for the construction of a new hospital, and
WHEREAS, the Dade County Medical Association, by its Execu-
tive Committee, has likewise endorsed the plan by a unanimous
vote, and
WHEREAS, a site at 10th Street and West Avenue has been
secured upon which it is planned to erect said hospital , the
same being an ideal location in size and in close proximity to
the most heavily populated area of Miami Beach, and which is
located at a point between the County and Venetian Causeways,
where many of the emergency cases now occur, and
WHEREAS, the men who have organized the plan and who are
acting as trustees are representative citizens of integrity
and responsibility and may be relied upon to conduct the affairs
and property of the hospital, with intelligence, care and loyalty,
and
WHEREAS, an application is to be made to the Works Progress
Administration of the Federal Government to secure the funds
with which to construct said hospital,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the members of
the City Council of the City of Miami Beach, at this its meeting
this 3rd day of May, 1939, do go upon record as endorsing the
plan to secure fuels from the Works Progress Administration for
the construction of said hospital, and join in asking said Federal
Agency to give the application favorable consideration.
