Sprint In October 2016 and with the specific purpose of addressing America's Homework Gap, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure announced the creation of the [Million Project at a town hall event with President Obama. In less than one year, the 1 Million Project has evolved from concept to a national program; specifically designed to help one million high school students who do not have reliable Internet access at home reach their full potential, by giving them devices and free high-speed Internet access. In 2017-2018 Sprint selected M-DCPS to participate in the 1 Million Project. During this school year, M-DCPS was allocated approximately 10,000 phones for eligible 9th and I Oth grade students. Students will have use of the devices and Internet service for the four years they are enrolled in high school. Sprint will continue to provide the district with devices for the next four years, to ensure all eligible high school students in grades 9-12 have access to reliable Internet at home. The total in-kind value of this project, over the five-year span, is more than $116 million. Prior to the 1 Million Project, M-DCPS partnered with Sprint in 2015 to provide free hotspot service to 19 schools as part of the Jump Start and Connect @Home projects to provide Internet connectivity and access to digital resources to students living in households with low socio-economic status. The district purchased 1,200 hot spots and Sprint provided free Internet service for four years. Sprint is a valuable partner assisting M-DCPS to dose the digital divide. .G 2009 Eugenia B.Thomas Publix Supermarkets, Inc. Ms. Margo Anderson, aka "Abuelita" is in front of the school each morning with her school store on wheels and a huge smile on her face. She reminds everyone to have a good breakfast in the cafeteria and to learn something wonderful every day. Ms.Anderson took over the HMS School Store and made sure it was fully stocked and ready to open at 8:30 AM every day. She is now part of the welcome committee in front of the school, smiling and wishing the children well every morning. She has also learned their names. She offers teachers a helping hand with their materials and is often caught in the act of "freshening up" the hallway bulletin boards. t 4c.tvtavndigr JchooG `Uotiriteeiss This tiny bundle of energy attends the school's evening events and runs the PTSA concession stand. Youth Emily Wolman Brucie Ball Educational Center Emily Wolman implemented the first ever Toy Drive for intellectually and medically disabled students attending Brucie Ball Educational Center. She has put in over 300 volunteer hours and has assisted with a multitude of activities and special projects for the school. At the beginning of her ninth -grade year at Miami Arts Studio 6-12 at Zelda Glazer (September of 2014), she met with Principal Dr. Miguel Balsera to discuss her toy drive action plan. Her goal was to purchase 150 to 200 new, unwrapped, age-appropriate sensory toys for intellectually and medically disabled students. She collaborated with commissioners, and employees at libraries, schools, businesses and community groups to acquire the funds to buy the toys. Additionally, she developed and produced a public service announcement to effectively promote the toy drive. In her six years of coordinating and running this toy drive, she has seen firsthand the impact it has had on the community and on students and their families. Emily is special, and, for her, the sky is the limit. &xe{nAi Oacte _097.4frZCi4Sr Schoolwide City of Miami Beach North Region The City of Miami Beach has made it a mission to provide incredible financial and professional support to academic programs at schools within the City of Miami Beach. The City assisted greatly in the launch of the International Baccalaureate Program at all the schools within the municipality. Schoolwide First Priority of South Florida South Region Succeeding in school can already be a challenge for students; but for students who are homeless or living in transitional housing, the concern over lack of basic necessities like food can greatly interfere with their studies. That is where First Priority of South Florida comes in.This Christian non-profit organization provides backpacks with non-perishable food items for these students every weekend. Each bag also includes a note of encouragement for them. In addition to the Backpack Program, First Priority of South Florida volunteers donate and serve food to Saturday School students; mentor students; support the Robotics Club and Safety Patrol; and hosted a Hawaiian -themed Teacher Appreciation party. The director also served as the school's Principal TODAY. First Priority has served Mandarin Lakes K-8 Academy in both a physical and emotional sense.
