The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of
December 9, 2002:
Art Basel/Miami Beach - The renowned international art show Art Basel /
Miami Beach, successfully concluded all its events on Sunday, December 8,
According to the preliminary information received, all associated events were
extremely successful and generated a number of positive media stories
highlighting our city, Art Basel organizers are very pleased with the successful
outcome of the event and are very appreciative of our efforts, Discussions on
enhancing next year's event will take place during our next Major Events
Planning (MEP) session on Monday, December 16.
Neighborhood Leadership Academy - The Fire Department made their
presentation on December 9, The participant's surveys, completed at the end of
the session, were extremely positive and the residents participating keep offering
very positive feedback about the sessions. The Neighborhood Services
Department will compile these results and share the feedback provided with each
department that presented as well as with the Mayor and Commission. The next
session is scheduled for Monday, December 16 and will include a presentation
from the Arts, Culture and Entertainment, Tourism and Economic Development
Divisions,
Summer Festival Season - Representatives from the administration met on
December 9 to continue discussing plans for an enhanced Summer Festival in
2003. Further details will be provided as they become available,
Major Events Plan (MEP) - Staff representatives continued meeting to prepare
for several upcoming major events taking place in the first quarter of 2003. A
Major Events Planning meeting has been scheduled for Monday, December 16
to finalize logistical details for several of these events. A list of all scheduled
special events taking place in early 2003 will be sent to the Mayor and
Commission by the end of this month.

Nightlife Advisory Task Force (NITE) - Staff met with members of the Nightlife
Industry Task Force on December 10 to discuss the Under 21 Ordinance as well
as the Task Force's request to amend the restriction. A discussion was also held
regarding the upcoming special events scheduled to take place in the City
throughout the next couple of months.
New World Symphony - Members of the administration met with New World
Symphony representatives to discuss the public benefits of the proposed
Soundspace Project at the Washington and 17 Street West Lot. The New World
Symphony touted educational, community programming benefits, resident
discounts and plans for an annual performance held for the City. They also
updated the staff on an anonymous donation that enables the project to proceed
expeditiously but emphasized the need to accelerate processing of the Lease
and Development Agreement.
Municipal Transportation Surtax - I met with representatives from the
administration on December 12 to discuss the details of the proposed municipal
transportation tax. The topic was further discussed at the Dade League of Cities
meeting on December 13. Further information will be presented on this subject
matter is it becomes available,
Bass Museum of Art Re-Dedication Celebration - Staff continued finalizing
planning details for the re-dedication of the Bass Museum on December 12,
Several hundred people participated in the evening celebration.
Film and Print Industry in Miami Beach - Staff met to discuss and plan for
upcoming film and print projects throughout the City. An LTC with details about
all upcoming productions will be sent shortly.
Employee Recognition Initiatives - Staff members have been meeting to plan
several upcoming programs aimed at recognizing the good work performed by
our employees. Under coordination is the "Employee Recognition/Holiday
Celebration" on December 20 and the "Annual Employee Awards and
Recognition Event," taking place on January 13. The Awards Show, previously
referred to as the "Pin Party", will highlight longevity anniversaries as well as
include a talent show and is part of our "Waves of Change Customer Service
Appreciation Week" schedule for January 13-17,
800 MHz Public Radio System - I have now met with each member of the
Internal Review Committee and with representatives from our consultant ReC.
My next step is to meet with representatives of each vendor to continue learning
about the pro's and con's of each system. A decision is expected before the end
of the year.
