A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING FLORIDA ATTORNEY
GENERAL PAM BONDI TO INCREASE THE STATE'S EFFORTS TO
IDENTIFY AND HOLD ACCOUNTABLE THOSE WHO VICTIMIZE
FLORIDA'S SENIOR CITIZENS THROUGH REVERSE MORTGAGE
FRAUD.
WHEREAS, a reverse mortgage can be a legitimate financial tool; however, some senior
citizens are susceptible to schemes targeting their lifestyle and savings; and
WHEREAS, fraudulent reverse mortgage schemes can sometimes result in the loss of
equity in an unsuspecting senior citizen's home; and
WHEREAS, the Office of Inspector General for the United States Department of Housing ,
and Urban Development has previously issued a Fraud Bulletin warning of the danger of
fraudulent reverse mortgage schemes affecting senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, also warns
of reverse mortgage scams on its website, and urges consumers, especially senior citizens, to
be vigilant when seeking reverse mortgage products, noting that reverse mortgages have
greatly increased over the years creating significant opportunities for fraud perpetrators; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach strongly support
efforts to increase the investigation and prosecution of those who commit reverse mortgage
fraud again Florida's senior citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby urge Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to increase the State's efforts to
identify and hold accountable those who victimize Florida's senior citizens through reverse
mortgage fraud.
