Bike Safety PowerPointBike ‘safety’ in Miami Beach
-Commissioner Ricky Arriola
“How many times have you been hit by a car? I’m concerned about whats going on with you”
I stopped counting. It’s depressing how dangerous our roads are
You’re concerned?
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
I’ve been speaking to the commission for *years* practically begging you
to make our
streets safer.
The power to do so is in YOUR hands.
-Commissioner Ricky Arriola
“I ride a bike constantly… never been hit by a car”
Please tell that to the families of:
Reddy Narahari
Walter Reyes
Aaron Cohen
and the scores of other cyclists that have died
150 deaths in FL during 2015 - 18% of all fatalities nationwide*
Consider yourself lucky. With the current conditions of our roadways,
if you ride a bike around here, it’s not a matter of if - it’s WHEN, HOW OFTEN
& HOW SERIOUSLY
Sometimes it only
takes ONCE to die

“I would argue what I do is more dangerous because I’m riding at high speeds, locked in and not pleasurable”
I ride at just as high (if not higher speeds)
I also am clipped in
And we apparently have different definitions of pleasurable. I enjoy training and racing.
Getting to and from work,
however, is a necessity.

“Maybe we should revisit how and where you’re biking”
The videos and photos clearly show ‘how’
On the roads designed by YOUR staff, MDC and FDOT
According to laws that are supposed to be enforced by MBPD

“Being hit dozens of times is dangerous…maybe at some point you should reevaluate what you’re doing.”
YES it is dangerous! That is why I’m here, and have been for years.
Unfortunately, it’s YOU that is in a position to improve safety… not me

What the study found should hardly surprise anyone who bikes: Cyclists obeyed traffic laws at almost the same rate as drivers (88.1 percent compared to 86 percent)
A (non-scientific)
survey by Florida-based bike lawyer Bill Bone found that almost 75 percent of drivers didn’t know about the state's three-foot law.
Some 20 percent of the 1,500 respondents said that
bicycles belong on the sidewalk
fewer than five miles of protected bike lanes exist in the entire state. (That's less than in the city of Memphis, Tennessee, alone.)
On-street lanes
are more common, but e high-speed MacArthur Causeway to Miami Beach.
So the research showed that cyclists A) largely obey the law; B) aren’t responsible for most near-collisions; and
C) when they do break the law, do so for reasons of perceived safety.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
So… how is all of this *MY* fault?

“Might it be something you’re doing?”
