I'd like to make sure that Peter Whoriskey's June 28 article on
Philippe Starck, the designer of our new Delano Hotel on Miami Beach, was not
misconstrued by your readers as defaming the city. Not at all.
The fact is, I love Miami! I would scarcely have invested more than $25
million to create a resort here if my team didn't think that Miami is one of
the most exciting and energized cities in the world. It speaks volumes that
Delano represents my first foray outside of New York. Basically, we've put our
money where our mouth is.
Philippe Starck was attempting -- in his own, inimitable fashion -- to
explain to Mr. Whoriskey why he thought that Miami was the perfect setting for
Delano. As a true original, Philippe is constantly trying to take everything
he does in a completely new and innovative direction. With Delano he was able
to capitalize on Miami's intrinsic charms and richness and use them as a
springboard to create something really extraordinary that can only add to the
city's already formidable allure.
As the saying goes, "Actions speak louder than words." We're here, and we
can't imagine any place we'd rather be.
