Hello Larry. While getting off the ground on the Miami Beach hotel history book, I reread all the notes
accumulated for the first Miami Beach book (including plenty from you; thanks) and have come to the conclusion
that Brown's Hotel (it's now without an apostrophe; why?)was not built—completed — until 1916, rather than the
1915 often credited to it.
My reasoning: Deep within a story published in the Miami Herald Oct. 15, 1916 ("More Rooms This Season for
Visitors"),this is what it says in the last paragraph, among other things not having to do with the hotel:
"...and a hotel erected by W. J. Brown after the close of last winters season..."
Knowing how the seasons worked in those days and knowing that the annoucement that the hotel would be built
was not until April 24, 1915, it would appear that the "close of last winter's season"wouldn't be until sometime in
February or March 1916. Wouldn't that make sense to you?
