W. J. BROWN, SR. , DIES IN ILLINOIS HOSPITAL
Pioneer Resident Built and Operated First Hotel Constructed In Miami Beach
William J. Brown, Sr. , 53, pioneer Miamian, who resided here with his
daughter, Mrs. Max King, 737 N.W. Nineteenth Street, died Thursday in the
• government hospital at Hines, Ill, where he had been a patient for 10 months.
Mr. Brown built, and for many years operated, the Brown Hotel, the
first hotel constructed in Miami Beach. He was a native of Glasgow, Scotland,
coming to this country in 1898. He came to Miami from New York in 1904.
For many years he operated a plumbing firm and since 1922 he had been
connected with the Miami Water Company. Besides his daughter, he leaves a
son, William J. Brown, Jr. , of New York. He will be buried today in the
cemetery at Hines.
