Dear Sy,
Possibly you know that I am writing a book on the
history of Miami Beach. If you didn 't know before, you
know now. The book is being underwritten by folks with
ties to the Hotel and Resort Association with the
proviso that they do not meddle with the content.
The reason I am writing you about this is that I need
to get into Miami Beach 's official historical files and
don 't know who to contact. Hopefully you can open a
door for me.
Also, in all the years I have lived here, I have heard
continued references to an old law that required blacks
to have special permits to be on the streets of Miami
Beach after dark. I have never seen one of those
permits and I have never had anyone tell me they have
seen them.
Yet the story persists. If there was a law, it would
have been something passed by the City Council and
later rescinded by same. I 'm looking for either one of
those ordinances. I need to either put this story to
rest or to document it. ( I do, however, have actual
photos of buildings that say "Gentiles Only, " but none
that say "No Dogs or Jews Allowed" and don 't believe
that one ever existed. )
I would appreciate you having someone contact me- about
this so that I can spend some time chasing down the
ghosts of Miami Beach, both the good ones and the bad.
