HOWARD KLEINBERG TEL'(305)235-1130 NATIONAL COLUMNIST FAX (305)233-0522 • July 30, 1992 Mr. Tom Harney Public Information Officer Smithsonian Museum of Natural History Constitution Avenue at 10 Street Washington, DC 20560 Dear Mr. Harney, In addition to being a national columnist for Cox Newspapers, I am a historian and currently writing a book on the history of Miami Beach. I address myself to you because I noted in an Associated Press story in June that you were quoted regarding a request from some Floridians for a return of the skull of Lewis Powell , executed for his part in the assassination of Lincoln. What grabbed my attention about the story was a reference to the skull being found along with some Indian remains. It 's the Indian remains that vitally interest me. There is a long standing story (samples enclosed) that when an Indian burial mound in Surfside, FL, -- contiguous to Miami Beach -- was excavated in 1934, the skulls and other bones were shipped to the Smithsonian but, for whatever reason, never got there. Or so it was claimed. As you can see from one of the enclosures, the Florida State archaeologist of the time surmised they may be lost in the Smithsonian 's basement. I am wondering if there is any chance that the lost bones are the same as the Indian remains found with Powell 's skull . Anticipating your response, I remain: Sincerely, Howard Kleinberg enclosures Atlanta Constitution and Journal • Austin American-Statesman • Chandler Arizonan • Dayton Daly News • Gilbert Tribune Grand Junction Daily Sentinel • Longview News-Journal • Lufkin Daily News • Mesa Tribune • Nacogdoches Daly Sentinel • Palm Beach Daily News Palm Beach Post • Springfield News-Sun • Tempe Daly News • Waco Tribune-Herald • Yuma Daily Sun •
