Mr . Howard Kleinberg
14520 Southwest 79th Court

Dear Howard:
The coastal survey of is the survey of 54/42 ! By
arrangement with the Coast and Geodetic Survey (under Bache in
1848) , the keys along the Florida coast were surveyed by the CGS.
Because the demand for this land was relatively low, the Surveyor
General ' s Office and the General Land Office did not see any
necessity to survey these islands in the regular fashion. (See
the explanation at the lower left of the survey I sent you. )
I have some letters, now being copied for me, that show the
problem existed in the 1890s when Lum, Osborn, Field and friends
were trying to purchase the lands. I will send these down as
soon as I receive them from Irene Randolph in our Title and Land
Records Section.
I am writing instead of calling because we don' t know when
full telephone service will be restored to you. Hope the
hurricane did little damage to your area, and none to your home
and property.
With much concern,
Dr . 'uue Knetsch
