Resolution 6683 RESOLUTION NO. 6683
WHEREAS, the Civil Aeronautics Board has decreed that a
hearing be held before said Board to determine whether National
Airlines, Inc. , shall be permitted to continue in existence or
shall be dissolved and apportioned to its competitors, and
WHEREAS, the avowed purpose of the Civil Aeronautics Board is
to consider this proposed action solely on the basis of whether it
is in the "public interest" , and
WHEREAS the City Council of the City of Miami Beach, Florida,
is of the opinion that the proposal to dissolve National Airlines
and transfer its routes to other air lines is contrary to the
"public interest" , not only of the City of Miami Beach but of the
other communities served by National Airlines and of the entire
United States, for reasons among which are the following, to-wit:
(a) National Airlines ' present system is the evolution of
15 years, a pattern which developed because of the public neces-
sity of the 34 cities in the system to be joined "together" by an
air line serving them all. Transfer of various routes to several
different carriers will destroy this unified service. The City of
Miami Beach is convinced that its air transportation facilities,
so vital to its prosperity, would suffer by the proposed action.
(b) If a utility corporation which has provided the fine
service which National Airlines has rendered, and worked diligently
to improve and extend its service at considerable investment of
labor and capital, can be forced out of existence after pioneering
toward the day it can expect to reap its reward, this precedent
may act as a definite deterrent for other air lines . The proposed
action threatens seriously to impede the development of air
transportation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Miami Beach, Florida, that protest be and the same is hereby
made on behalf of said City against the holding of the proposed
hearing by the Civil Aeronautics Board.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this resolution
be forwarded by the City Clerk to the Civil Aeronautics Board,
Washington 25, D. C.
