NO. LTC # 365-•2018 LETTER TO COMMISSION
To: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members cf the Cityommission
From: Jimmy L. Morales, City Mana
Date: June 27, 2018
Subject: Digital Citizens Coding Bootcamp
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide information on the Digital Citizens
Coding Bootcamp for Miami Beach residents and business owners that provided specialized
computer training. The below link includes information directly from participants of the North
Beach series: https://youtu.be/Ou8hNKxSpH8.
At the October 19, 2016 Commission meeting, Commissioner Aleman introduced the concept of
providing a free technology boot camp for low to middle income residents interested in
improving their technology skills. The suggested concept would model a program currently
available to the Liberty City community providing technical expertise, coding, and professional
support to those interested in careers in technology industries.
The City engaged EcoTech Visions Foundation, Inc. to provide two (2) Bootcamp Series for
residents and business owners throughout Miami Beach. A registration lottery was held in
January where approximately 170 residents and business owners requested access. Due to
computer lab limitations, fifty (50) applicants were enrolled, with the remainder placed on a wait
list. The North Beach series was from January 23, 2018 through March 17, 2018 at the North
Shore Youth Center and the Middle/South Beach series was from March 28, 2018 through May
20, 2018 at Miami Beach City Hall. Each series provided for eight weeks in a computer lab two
(2) days per week, including the weekend, for approximately 25 residents.
Participants learned in demand tech skills including the following:
• Programming — introduction to various programming languages and how each are used
• Social Media — leverage different social media channels to increase brand awareness
• Marketing — learn about inbound and outbound marketing and how to achieve results
• Presentation — practice a pitch and learn how to woo potential investors and audience
