MIAMI TROPICAL MARATHON-COMMUNITY MEETING
Date: January 9, 2003
As you may already know, the Miami Tropical Marathon is scheduled to take place on Sunday,
February 2, 2003, with a 5:50 a.m. wheelchair start and a 6:00 a.m. runner start time. Race
organizers expect over 5,000 participants to compete in the marathon or half-marathon. The City of
Miami Beach will host the half marathon, 13.1 miles, leg of the race. Race rules state that anyone
who falls behind on a 14-minute mile will be disqualified from the race and be picked up bya shuttle
bus. Therefore, all marathon racers will have exited the City of Miami Beach by 8:30 a.m.
The Miami Tropical Marathon, an inaugural world-class marathon with a $50,000 cash prize purse,
hopes to establish itself among other elite marathons such as San Diego, Chicago and New York.
The 26.2-mile course will begin and end in front of the American Airlines Arena and run through the
City of Miami Beach, City of Miami and Miami-Dade County.
The race route will go as follows (see attached route map):
North on Biscayne - Exit City of Miami, East on MacArthur Causeway, Southeast on Alton Road,
East on Biscayne Street (South Pointe Drive), North on Ocean Drive, West on 14th Street, North on
Washington Avenue, Southwest on Dade Boulevard, North on Praide Avenue, West on 23rd Street,
South on Meridian Avenue, Southwest on Dade Boulevard, West on the Venetian Causeway, Enter
City of Miami
The Miami Beach Police Department will implement a comprehensive traffic plan that includes over
50 police officers, volunteers and numerous detour signs that will allow traffic to flow with ease.
Much effort has been put forth in notifying the neighborhoods to be effected by the marathon,
including Palm/Hibiscus and Star Islands, South Pointe, Ocean Drive, Middle Beach and the
Venetian Islands. In fact, neighborhood outreach began in June 2002. In December 2002, the
effected neighborhoods were sent notifications with race information specific to their neighborhoods,
including race times, locations of water and first aid tents, as well as entertainment stages. The
notifications also included the announcement of a community meeting to be held to discuss the
marathon.
In addition, please be advised that a community meeting will be held to discuss the Miami Tropical
Marathon on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at 6:00 pm in City Hall, First Floor Conference Room. The
meeting notice is attached. Also attached is a previous LTC that was sent in October 2002 with
additional details.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me.
