OFFICE OF THE CITY MANACCD
NO. LTC # 378-2018 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and
Members of the City CommissionL;; :)
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE: July 6, 2018
SUBJECT: FUNKSHION/CABANA— USE OF M NICIPAL PARKING LOT P-49
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to provide information to the Mayor and
Commissioners regarding Funkshion/Cabana's use of the south side of municipal parking
lot, located at Collins Avenue between 21St and 22nd Streets(P-49), from July 5 through July
20th, 2018.
Funkshion specializes in fashion shows and presentation. Since 2005, they have been
holding fashion shows in Collins Park twice a year during Swim Week. As Swim Week
grew, so did Funkshion, needing then to expand their productions to hotels in the area as
Collins Park became too small to accommodate them. This year, like last year, Funkshion-
Cabana (trade show portion of Funkshion) could not operate at the Convention Center due
to construction and related unavailability of needed halls. Consequently, they approached
the City with the request to operate out of a tent to be erected on the south side of P-49.
Funkshion - Cabana attracts swimwear designers from around the world and booked over
6,000 hotel nights this July. Their traffic impact in Miami Beach is minimal given that the
great majority of attendees will be staying in area hotels. Understanding their space
predicament, their request to erect a tent and operate on the south side of P-49 was
approved with the caveat that in addition to paying to reserve the needed spaces in P-49,
they had to provide alternate parking in Collins Park to accommodate both, area municipal
parking lot permit holders, short-term parkers for the area at-large and beachgoers. At their
expense, Funkshion management contracted with the private parking garage located at 237
20th Street to provide free of charge, up to 100 spaces for permit holders. Other users are
able to park at the garage (based upon availability of the 100 spaces)for the same$2.00 per
hour fee charged at municipal lots.
This is stipulated to be the last year that this accommodation will be granted, as Funkshion
will return to the Convention Center in July of 2019.
