LTC 43-2003 CITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission To: From: Subject: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission Jorge M. Gonzalez ~ ~/x/~~ City Manager HANDHELD UPDATE Date: February 5, 2003 This is to advise you of recent technological developments that may have a significant impact on the City's Handheld Inspection Project. The City was informed that production of the selected device for the Handheld Inspection Project, the Hewlett-Packard Jornada 728, had been discontinued. This was as a result of a decision by Microsoft to discontinue support for the PCS 2000 operating system of the Jornada product line. The ramifications of this development are as follows: · an analysis of other available handheld devices has been conducted and presented for departmental review and evaluation; · all participating departments, (Building, Code, Fire, Engineering and Sanitation), have agreed upon the device to be used, a tablet PC, and a request for bids has been issued; · program specifications will need to be rewritten to match the selected device and operating system; · the software development cost have increased due to the changes in programming necessitated by the selection and purchase of new devices; · the new device will increase the cost by some $800-$1,000 per unit; and · the Handheld Project timeline will be revised following the receipt of bids. It is expected that the vendor selection process can be completed by late-February, 2003. The increased costs for the project can be determined and a revised timeline and budget will be prepared and submitted to the City Commission for approval at the end of March, 2003. Despite this setback to the Handheld Project, it is clear that the project will go forward in a timely fashion with your continued support. JMG\PDW~MKR\
