ANALYSIS
The Miami Beach Fire Rescue Department, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Medtronic
Physio-Control, and the American Heart Association have been working to establish Miami
Beach as a designated "Heart Safe Community". The goal of the project is to train people
to recognize heart attacks, strokes and sudden cardiac arrest, to administer CPR and
operate Automatic External Defibrillators. Defibrillation within three minutes is considered
to be the best way to save a person in cardiac arrest.
A major part of this initiative is to place Automatic External Defibrillators (AED'S), within
three minutes of anyplace in the city. This AED is the sixth of 375 estimated to be the
need for city entities. The AED is valued at $3,500 and will be placed in a police vehicle
occupied by an officer trained to administer CPR and automatic defibrillation. The Fire
Department will coordinate appropriate training of personnel.
The Administration recommends adopting the resolution.
