Evolution of today's Miami Beach, from Romans map of 1770
which shows Miami Beach (Boca Ratones) to be a peninsular of
the mainland on the east and an elongated island on the west
that encompasses the natural land masses of today's Fisher
Island and Virginia Key. Indian Creek inlet filled in and
early 19th century hurricane created Norris Cut which
separates today's Virginia Key from today's Miami Beach.
Government Cut (1905) separated Fisher Island from Miami
Beach. Hundreds of acres of bay bottom were filled in on
both Fisher and Virginia to give them their outline today.
