Dear Mr. Kleinberg:
Thank you for your letter of July 8, 1992. I'm glad to learn of your
research and book on Miami Beach. I'll try to answer some of your queries.
To the best of my knowledge there are no detailed maps of the Miami-
Biscayne Bay region that pre-date those done in the 1760's by DeBrahm. The
1760's cartography is not included in my book, DeBrahm's Report (Columbia,
S.C. , 1971) . I did, however, publish a good photograph of his "Cape Florida
according to the Surveys made May 13 & 29 1765" in an article titled "Wayward
Ocean River," The Geographical Magazine (April, 1980) pp. 506-07.
For Romans' spelling of Boca Ratones/Rattones check Notes on the Life
and Works of Bernard Romans [Facsimile of the 1924 edition] ed. by John D.
Ware (Univ. Presses of Florida, 1975) . I can't add anything beyond what is
included. You might check with specialists in the Geography and Map Division
at the Library of congress on the possibility of a change being introduced in
the preparation of the facsimile.
Roland Chardon may have taken his spelling from a manuscript map by
DeBrahm found at Harvard. For information on the Harvard material see pp. 44-
47 and 273 in DeBrahm's Report.
I hope that his may be of some assistance in your work. Please extend
my best regards to Joe Fitzgerald.
Sincerely,
,‘;-4..)-1
