Miami Beach Electric Company Hopes to Have 15-Minute
Schedule in Operation Before End of Present Season
Street car service across the new causeway between Miami and Miami Beach during
the present season is the aim of the Miami Beach Electric Co. , and work on the
construction of the new line is being rushed in order that the two cities can be
connected by trolley at the earliest date possible.
Every arrangement has been made and perfected to have a most complete and
elaborate service. Only the finest up-to-date cars are to be in use, built by the
Cincinnati Car Company, of Ohio.
The route arranged by the Miami Beach Electric Company covers the whole of Miami
Beach and touches at every important place, and the causeway drive will be one of the
finest street car rides in the world.
The cars are to be of the very latest safety design of the pay-as-you-enter
system. Each car will be operated by one man and the entrance and exit will be in
front and to insure absolute safety the doors cannot be opened until the car comes to
a full stop and likewise the car cannot be started until the doors are again closed.
The rear door will be used in case of emergency only. They will be absolutely
noiseless in operation, with a seating capacity of thirty-six passengers. The cars
will be immaculate in color and cleanliness and the uniforms of all operating will be
white. The car barns will be equipped with the latest washing and compressed air
apparatus for cleaning and each car will be thoroughly cleaned daily.
The route is to be from starting at Twelfth Street down to Avenue C to Rickmers
Street, across the causeway to Miami Beach, south along Alton Road ,to First Street,
then to Miami Avenue, then along Miami Avenue north and Sheridan Avenue to the canal,
across the canal to Dade Boulevard, then west on Alton Road to the causeway and back
to Miami. Cars will be run in both directions, the tracks being provided with
turn-outs for passing.
There will be a fifteen-miunte schedule from Miami to the Beach and from Miami
Beach casino will be made in twenty-six minutes. Ten cars will be in operation to
begin with, which number will be augmented as the conditions demand.
(Note: Miami Avenue was renamed Washington Avenue and Sheridan Avenue was renamed
Park Avenue. )
