RECORD PRODUCER PLANS JAMAICA RESORTS
Record producer Chris Blackwell's Island Trading Co. said Thursday it
plans to build three luxury resorts in Jamaica for affluent vacationers.
Blackwell has already made his mark in Miami Beach. Island Trading, a
Blackwell-owned hotel management company operates three Art Deco hotels. One
of the hotels, The Marlin, boasts a state-of-the-art recording studio.
Together with Miami Beach-based Dacra Cos. , Blackwell has redeveloped_ The
Netherlands, one of the largest Art Deco buildings in South Beach, into'l.uxury
condominiums. The building also has space for offices, restaurants and shops.
The first of the three resorts, Strawberry Hill, will open in March. It
will have 10 villas on a property previously used as a club for British naval
officers and as a coffee plantation, said Robbie Epstein, director of
operations for Island Outposts.
Blackwell, who was once reggae superstar Bob Marley's manager, is
developing a chain of hotels and guest villas in Jamaica, Florida and the
Bahamas called Island Outposts.
Blackwell recently acquired the former Jamaican residence of playwright
Sir Noel Coward to develop as a tourist attraction.
