SUBJECT: SUMMER READING EXPLORER PROGRAM
The Parks and Recreation Department is proud to inform the Mayor and Commission of its recent
partnership with The Children's Trust and Florida International University to provide the Summer
Reading Explorers Program to campers enrolled at the North Shore Park and Youth Center.
This unique program follows a response to an intervention approach to support young children in
need of pre-literacy supports during the summer prior to entering kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grades.
Specific services include:
• Reading assessments for all children in the specified age range to identify children in need
of targeted reading intervention beyond that typical provided by the summer program, with
parent feedback about results.
• Small group tutoring services for struggling readers and pre-readers using evidence-
based curriculum led by certified teachers.
• Parent involvement activities at the site to engage families in supporting literacy skills at
home, including book giveaways, direct skills training and connecting families to school
year resources and supports to further develop children's reading skills.
104 children in grades K-2 participated in the program from June 11 to August 3, 2018. The
success of the program was evident as 81 of the participants increased their reading level from
"frustrational" while 23 participants who stayed in "frustrational" were referred to reading services
at their schools.
The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to making sure our children have facilities
and programs in place to not only have fun and recreate, but to also support each child's
educational success. ·
