IZOD COMPANY UNIFORM SPONSORSHIP
Date: Mamh 20, 2003
As many of you are aware, the City has had several months of negotiations with the IZOD Company
to furnish the City with uniforms on a donated basis. The IZOD Company had proposed to
completely outfit the Beach Patrol and Pool Guards with the potential of future expansion of uniform
donations to other areas of the City.
The proposal with IZOD was to provide a full range of uniform items at no cost to the City for the
Beach Patrol consisting of twenty-four (24) different pieces of uniform clothing. The clothing items
are far superior to the current uniform. The IZOD Company has estimated the retail value of the
uniform items at approximately $160,000.00 annually.
In pursuing this donation to the City, the City has consulted with the Union and made a specific
proposal to the Union leadership to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding for the uniform
items. The City's proposal was basically to offer the uniform items to the Beach Patrol and Pool
Guards for a period of time consistent with the contract which was anticipated with IZOD. The
proposal was drafted so as not to disadvantage the City or the Union in the undertaking.
Unfortunately, the CWA Union response was to demand that a cleaning allowance and other items
be added to the Agreement at an annual cost of approximately $34,000 in order for them to accept
the donated uniform items as part of our Labor Agreement Understanding. The City could not agree
to this proposal and the Union to date has shown no willingness to keep the donation simple and
straight forward.
At this point in time, it appears as if the donated uniform proposal of IZOD for Beach Patrol and the
Pool Guards will not be possible based on the Union's position. We will make every effort to
encourage IZOD to reach out to other City Departments to see if the relationship with IZOD can be
maintained but as of this date we are uncertain how they will wish to proceed.
Please feel free to contact me or Assistant City Manager Robert C. Middaugh if you have any
questions regarding this particular Agreement and the discussions with IZOD and the Union.
