Resolution 8571 RESOLUTION NO. 8521
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach has for a long time past been
negotiating with engineering and contracting firms, contemplating the
construction of a new causeway span to be located in the area of 36th
Street in Miami and 41st Street in Miami Beach, calculated to furnish
additional ingress and egress to Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, for more than five weeks the City of Miami Beach has
on numerous occasions publicly advised the citizens of the community
through the press and other media of communication of the progress
being made towards the construction of a new causeway by the City of
Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the negotiations have almost been consummated for the
entering into of a contract for the construction of said causeway,
including the financing thereof;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Miami Beach that all governmental bodies formally be apprised of
the action of the City of Miami Beach and be urged to refrain from
any competitive action in the matter which would be contrary to the
interests of the people of the Greater Miami community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the responsibility for the erection
of such a causeway rests with the citizens of Miami Beach, and, if
undertaken by Miami Beach would make possible a free causeway between
Miami and Miami Beach when the revenue-producing bonds had been paid
for such new causeway -- that is, within thirty years; while, on the
other hand, should any other agency attempt the erection of such
causeway, it might mean the mortgaging of such a new construction for
one hundred years, since it is apparent that it is contemplated to
tie the financing of such construction into other less remunerative
construction projects, resulting in such a new causeway remaining with
tolls to burden the people of this community for many generations
beyond the time when it would otherwise be a free causeway if its
construction is pursued by the City of Miami Beach; and
-1-
I
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all governmental bodies be
requested to desist from further contemplation of the erection of
the 36th Street - 41st Street Causeway, the planning for which has
already been undertaken by the City of Miami Beach, and that the
said bodies give their complete cooperation to the previously
announced plans of the City of Miami Beach.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 10th day of November, A D. 1953.
