Dear Commissioner Gongora,
I'm reaching out as a long-term Miami Beach resident, property owner, civic activist and Surfrider Foundation
Miami Chapter Executive Committee Member.
We just learned about the proposed ordinance scheduled for its 2nd reading tomorrow"Amending Chapter 82
of the code of the CMB" relative to "Beaches, ""Restricted Areas," and watercraft including surfboards.
Surfrider Foundation and the hundreds of Miami Beach residents &thousands of Miami-Date County residents
that we represent are extremely concerned with this proposed ordinance that would further shrink the restricted
surfing area creating more dangerous conditions.
1
While we understand certain water sports do create conflicts, surfing is not one of them and we would hate to
see this wonderful, traditional recreation activity be restricted when it is not a problem in the first place.
In representing the above-mentioned groups,we kindly ask you to pull the item from tomorrow's agenda
so that we have a chance to work with the sponsoring commissioners and City Committees that proposed
this ordinance.
I look forward to your rapid response so we can plan appropriately to have our concerns incorporated whether it
be at the commission meeting tomorrow or in offline meetings that can be arranged at convenient times for all
concerned parties.
Apologies for the `11th hour' but frankly we were not aware of the details of this until this morning.
As background most of you are quite familiar with, Surfrider Foundation has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with
the City to protect and advocate for our precious beach playground and economic engine. This has included
thousands of volunteer hours performing dune restorations, beach cleanups and community education activities.
Respectfully,
Mike Gibaldi, Treasurer
Surfrider Foundation
