Resolution 10659 RESOLUTION NO. 10659
WHEREAS the sports committee of the Miami Beach Chamber of
Commerce met with County Manager Irving McNayr to discuss the
possibility of Dade County appropriating matching funds with the
City of Miami Beach to establish a total fund of some $750, 000
for the construction of a stadium on the site of the present
baseball field in Flamingo Park at Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS Mr. McNayr demonstrated a real interest and asked
that a member of the City Council accompany the committee at a
second such meeting; and
WHEREAS Councilman Melvin J . Richard did meet with the
committee and the County Manager at a subsequent meeting; and
WHEREAS it was pointed out to Mr. McNayr that such a
stadium would be useful for all athletic events of local schools
and would be available for use for televised and non-televised
outdoor events such as baseball, football, ice-hockey, ice shows,
soccer, boxing, concerts, operas, theatrical productions and
other similar type outdoor events; and
WHEREAS it was further pointed out to Mr. McNayr at that
meeting that the construction of such a stadium will likely
attract a big league baseball team for summer training, will give
the Dade County area great national publicity, will attract
tourists to the community, will add another attraction for tourists
and residents alike, would be especially appealing to the news
media since other big league baseball teams in the area would offer
regular competing games; and
WHEREAS it was further pointed out to Mr. McNayr that the
City of Miami Beach, at its expense provides great recreational
facilities for the entire county, for which no contribution is
made by the county, not only on the beaches but in a "free"
recreation program which costs the City of Miami Beach almost
half a million dollars per year; and
WHEREAS the County Manager was further informed that Miami
Beach contributes an inequitably high percentage of the tax load
for the county with little return; and
WHEREAS Mr. McNayr evinced great interest in the proposal,
indicated that the plan was entirely feasible and would meet with
his approval and would be recommended by him to the County
Commission; and
WHEREAS there are big league baseball teams presently
interested in locating summer training camp activities in Miami
Raar_h, Florida, if adequate facilities can be made available, and
time is of the essence;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the City of Miami
Beach, through its Mayor and City Council, does hereby formally
request that the County Commission appropriate the sum of $375, 000
toward construction of a baseball and sports stadium on the site
of the present baseball field in Flamingo Park at Miami Beach, and
BE IT FURTHER HEREBY RESOLVED that the County Commission set
up machinery with all possible speed, to confer with officials of
the City of Miami Beach to work out the details of the proposal
herein.
