Resolution 12371 RESOLUTION NO. 12371
WHEREAS the Congress of the United States, in recognition of the
palpable inadequacies of the Social Security benefits to meet the continually
increasing and spiralling costs cf living, duly enacted legislation increasing
benefits to recipients of Social Security by 132%, and
WHEREAS the Florida State Cabinet, in its capacity as the State Budget
Commission, has concurrently reduced budgetary allowances to the State Welfare
Board in such amounts so as to roll back or reduce State old-age assistance
benefits directly in proportion to the amount of increase of Federal Social
Security benefits, thereby depriving needy persons of the increase of Social
Security benefits and old-age assistance, leaving them in precisely the
same state of need in which they found themselves prior to such increase in
Federal Social Security benefits, and
WHEREAS the benefits of such economy to the State are utterly dispro-
portionate to the detriment of society resulting from imlboverishment of aged
persons in dire need of the barest essentials and needs of life, and
WHEREAS it is manifestly to the benefit of the State of Florida to be
attuned to the needs of worthy recipients of such assistance,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Florida State Cabinet, in its capacity as the State
Budget Commission, be and it is hereby earnestly requested to increase appropri-
ate budgetary allowances to the State Welfare Board, so that the latter Board
shall be required, in accordance with the aRpropriate directive, to make such
payments of public welfare assistance to the aged and other qualified recipients
in such amounts as will effect the ameliorative purposes of the Federal legis-
lation increasing Social Security benefits and that such action be taken
immediately and forthwith so as to remove the need and burden of want from
the shoulders of worthy recipients of public assistance.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be duly transmitted
to the Governor, to Members of the Cabinet and State Representatives and
Senators from Dade County, Florida.
