Resolution 11785 RESOLUTION NO. 11785
WHEREAS in 1964 the City of Miami Beach succeeded in
inducing Peekskill Enterprises, Inc. , the producers of the
Jackie Gleason Show, to transfer the production thereof from
New York to the Municipal Auditorium of the City of Miami
Beach, and
WHEREAS in order to induce said producer to make such
transfer it was necessary for the City to expend approximately
a quarter of a million dollars to adapt the said Auditorium for
television broadcasting purposes and to purchase and acquire
television cameras, lighting facilities and other essential
technical equipment, and
WHEREAS thereafter said Jackie Gleason Show successfully
produced thirty (30) one hour television programs which were
telecasted over the national Columbia Broadcasting System
during the 1964-1965 broadcast season, and
WHEREAS the glowing success attendant upon the production
of these programs impelled the producers of the said Jackie
Gleason Show to renew their agreement with the City of Miami
Beach for the television broadcasting season of 1965-1966, and
WHEREAS the City has been and is anticipating that other
nationally known programs would follow the example of the
Jackie Gleason Show in staging and telecasting their shows from
the City's Auditorium and thereby bring a new industry to the
City of Miami Beach, the County of Dade and the State of
Florida, and establish said area as a Radio and Television
Center analogous to and rivaling the major centers located in
New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, and
WHEREAS there are now pending negotiations with a number
of producers of other national television programs, with more
in prospect, and
WHEREAS by reason of the said efforts and substantial ex-
penditures of money made by the City of Miami Beach resulting
in publicity for the entire State of Florida, the amount an
extent of which cannot be calculated, and will continue to
result in tremendous financial and economic benefit to the
entire State of Florida, and
WHEREAS to meet the public demand for color television all
of the major television networks have converted or are convert-
ing the vast majority of their feature programs to color
television, and
WHEREAS in order for the City of Miami Beach to keep and
retain its status as a potential national television center it
is imperative and mandatory that color television equipment and
facilities be purchased and acquired in order to retain the
said Jackie Gleason Show and to induce other nationally known
television personalities to produce their shows in the City of
Miami Beach, and

WHEREAS it is estimated that the cost of acquisition of
such color television equipment and facilities is approximately
$150, 000, and
WHEREAS since the County of Dade and the entire State of
