Minutes October 24, 2017COMMITTEE FOR QUALITY EDUCATION City of Miami Beach Tuesday, October 24, 2017 9:00am – 11:00am If you are unable to attend, please call Dr. Leslie Rosenfeld, Committee Liaison, at 305/673-7000 x6923 Members Present: Beverly Heller, Beth Edwards, Karen Edelstein, Judith Berson-Levinson (PT), Betsy Mateu, Joshua Levy, Tiffany Heckler, Yudy De La Nuez, and Jill Swartz Members Absent: Jordan Leonard, Ivan Alvarez, Yvette Tache, Stewart Turner, Ka rmenchu Santana- Vega, and Faiza Liban  Reviewed Minutes from prior month and approved, garage parking cards distributed to members  Discussion made regarding Miami Beach High School field including fees for Flamingo Park use Motion made by Beverly Heller Motion seconded by Tiffany Heckler Motion Text: The Committee for Quality Education asks the Miami Beach Mayor and Commission to immediately request for the 2017-18 school year that Miami-Dade County Public Schools partner with the City of Miami Beach to assist in helping the Miami Beach Senior High School field be 100% usable by matching maintenance funds up to $22,000 and negotiate to allow community access after-school hours and weekends when the field is not being used by Miami Beach Senior High school youth. Motion Passage: Votes 8-0  Marijuana dispensary locations specifically the JCC – discussion deferred and requested to invite Tom Mooney from Planning Department  Parking lot of MB High and contract discussed. CMB and MDCPS agreement distributed to members. CMB has not requested nor been requested to provide overflow parking in the MBSH lot as of Oct. 2017.  Daca act deferred and request made to have Dr. Karp join n ext meeting to discuss MDCPS position and actions  Update from last meeting a. Job description of Security Personnel – sent to members via email b. Fence around Nautilus – MDCPS to schedule meeting with homeowner association at Nautilus Middle School (Tiva Leser and Mike Burnstein to be invited) c. Signage inventory completed by MDCPS per Sally Alayon d. Public Works update deferred e. Geo Bond below the line items- information requested from MDCPS not received f. Building four for MB Senior High – per Karp’s Office, expecting construction to begin January 2018. Region indicated new building is based on 2016 -17 student enrollment of 2450 students. g. 41 Street status two way – LTC distributed to members h. Biscayne Elementary request to review L Turn at 75th and Dickins – deferred to Nov. meeting i. Bayshore traffic study – traffic calming underway and Josiel Ferrer to attend next meeting j. Beach high drop of lane- deferred for Josiel Ferrer to attend next meeting  Security - Gov Scott gives 1 million to Jewish Day School for security discussion deferred until Nov. meeting  Enhancement Prioritization survey underway – survey will remain open until early November. City has reached out via social media, ConnectEd, flyers, etc. to encourage responses from parents. PTSAs are also assisting with sharing the survey link. Results will be transmitted via LTC in November.  Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention workshops through MDCPS parent academy underway. The City will also partner with an expert in the field to provide parent and student workshops on drug prevention and intervention beginning in January 2018, or December 2017 if possible.  LCSW expansion for mental health occurring in November for MBSH , Nautilus and Fienberg due to the receipt of a Miami Foundation grant of $50,000 to the MB Chamber Education Foundation in partnership with the Children’s Trust, Borinquen, MDCPS, and the City of Miami Beach  Mold prevention – Sally Alayon addressed the issue at Nautilus and indicated inspections have occurred  Karp’s Office invited to discuss 5771 at next meeting  Data on canine searches at Miami Beach schools requested via email on 9/26/17 to Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (Eva) – No data received  School Board update provided Adjournment FUTURE MEETING DATES: 11/28/17, 1/23/18, 2/27/18, 3/20/18, 4/24/18, 5/22/18
