Review Minutes from prior month and approve
1. Mayor Dan Gelber provided information to the members regarding his educational
priorities. He discussed cops in schools. He indicated the city is committed to having
police officers (armed) in public schools. He is offering MB PD police radios to private
and charter schools. The Mayor discussed the STEAM program. He is focused on the A
or arts in STEAM. He wants to elevate the schools and have a STEAM plus feeder
pattern. He will bring in a program manager to infuse cultural arts into the feeder pattern
who will work only on this program and will work with Leslie Rosenfeld. The Mayor
also discussed college counselors and vocational support. He is looking to the MB
2. Volo Group Presentation – Commission ReferralC4AE April 11, 2018 – discussed and
motion made below. Also presentation by iFollow safety App (Steve Dinerman)

The Committee for Quality Education requests the Miami Beach Mayor and Commission
review the offer made by VOLO Group (Active Shooter Awareness Program) and share
it (if interested) with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and private school located in
Miami Beach.
The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commissio n to support the
above request.

3. Rain Drop Child Care Presentation – Commission referral C4AF Feb. 14, 2018 deferred
to May meeting.
4. No Place for Hate programming in MB public schools – May 2 Event 6 pm North Shore
Band Shell with viewing of movie Wonder – all were encouraged to attend
5. Drug Prevention and Intervention Series – status and updates (last session April 26 8am)
was reviewed and program deemed very valuable by members who had attended.
6. Bus Survey status and update – Commission item R9L Feb. 14 is underway and will
provide service for Fall 2017 to one school.

7. Educational Enhancement approved at April 11 Commission meeting were reviewed with
the members in detail.
• Reading tutors (South Point, Fienberg Fisher, North Beach, Biscayne & Nautilus)
$50,000
• Math tutors (Nautilus & Beach High) $20,000
• Mental Health expansion (South Point, Fienberg Fisher, North Beach, Biscayne &
Nautilus) $60,000
• College Prep Program (Beach High) $12,500
• After-school programs (Biscayne & Fienberg) $60,000
• VPK 1 class (Biscayne) $35,000
8. Fence around Nautilus – status and update provided.
9. Miami Beach Drop off lane deferred to next meeting
10. Biscayne Elementary request to review L Turn at 75th and Dickens deferred to next
meeting.
11. PTA Feeder Pattern Report provided by members.
12. School Board update provided by Karp’s Office. Discussed drug prevention series, sea
level rise, and sunshine state scholar Jacob Rosenfeld.
13. GEO Bond below the line items information requested no provided but still requested.
14. Publicly Notice Meeting was explained again to members.
Good and welfare – distribution of National Salute pamphlets to each school.
Discussed Beach High field enhancements and use request. Still pending MDCPS
response, as well as Biscayne Field MOU.
