A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH FLORIDA URGING THE METROPOLITAM
D~DE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS TO REVIEW
ITS REGULATIONS CONCERNING THE LICENSING AND
REGULATION OF FOR-HIRE MOTOR VEHICLES, FOR
PURPOSES OF INVESTIGATING THE LICENSING
PROCEDURES FOR TAXICAB DRIVERS AND EVALUATING
THE NEED FOR INCREASED LEGISLATION ON THIS
M~TTER SO THAT GREATER SAFETY ON PUBLIC STREETS
IS ENSURED.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH:
NHEREAS, recent media reports have raised serious revelations
concerning the background of taxicab drivers within Dade County~
and
WHEREAS, the licensing and regulation of For-Hire Passenger
Motor Vehicles, including regulations pertaining to obtaining a
chauffeur's license (pre-requisite to operating any for-hire motor
vehicle in Dade County) are presently embodied in Chapter 31,
Article II, Metropolitan Dade County Code~ and
WHEREAS, pursuant to said County Code provisions, Dade County
has exclusive jurisdiction pertaining to the regulation of for-hire
motor vehicles within the County~ and
WHEREAS, in light of the responsibility of ensuring
public safety as vested in the Dade County Commission via its
regulation of taxicab drivers, greater registration requirements
pertaining to said individuals must be insured for the purposes of
protecting the citizens of the City of Miami Beach as well as Dade
County as a whole~ and
wHEREAS, the Miami Beach City Commission thus urges the
Metropolitan Dade County Board of Commissioners to review its
regulations concerning For-Hire Motor Vehicles in an effort to
curtail public concern over the competency of the individuals
operating such motor vehicles in Dade County~ and to investigate
the need for increased legislation on this matter for the purposes
of ensuring greater safety on the public streets.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that it hereby urges the
Metropolitan Dade County Board of Commissioners to review its
regulations concerning For-Hire Motor Vehicles, as embodied within
Chapter 31, Article II, Metropolitan Dade County Code, for purposes
of investigating the licensing procedures for taxicab drivers, and
evaluating the need for increased legislation on this matter so
that greater safety on the public streets is ensured.
