Miami Beach Blooms with an Orchid Comeback
— City of Miami Beach to Plant 20,000 Orchids —
WHO/WHAT: Before the railroad came to Florida in the late 1800s, South Florida trees
were draped with the exquisite crevices and scents of native orchids. As
development expanded, these coveted blossoms were severed and
shipped north as plotted plants — among the first natural resources
exploited in this tropical paradise.
In an effort to bring back orchid prominence, the City of Miami Beach is
joining Fairchild Botanical Garden’s Million Orchid Project to plant 20,000
native orchids over the next three years on the urban-island.
This Friday at 10 a.m., be a part of the first ceremonial orchid planting by
the Calophyllum tree at City Hall.
WHEN: Friday, June 16 at 10 a.m.
WHERE: Miami Beach City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive
In front of the building on 17 Street between Meridian Avenue and
Convention Center Drive.
