City of Miami Beach Hosts Seventh Annual Family Service Day
– Volunteers and Non-Profit Agencies Connect on Saturday, September 29 –
Miami Beach, FL – On Saturday, September 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the City of Miami
Beach will hold its seventh annual Family Service Day.
This free event engages the community in projects that enhance local parks, restores
sand dunes crucial to our coastal environment, promotes school attendance and
environmental sustainability, transforms schools into healthy, safe and productive
learning environments, and promotes intergenerational dialogue between youth and
senior citizens. In addition, participants are introduced to community-based services and
resources, many of which are free including Success University, All-Stars, Parent-Child
Program and Homeless Outreach. All volunteers are eligible to receive up to three
community service hours in exchange for their time.
Hundreds of volunteers of all ages will gather for a day of public service at and around
North Beach Oceanside Park, 8101 Collins Avenue. On and off-site projects include the
following:
• Dune and waterway restoration
• Intergenerational recreation programs
• CPR training
• School beautification projects
• Removal of damaging non-native plants
• Cross-cultural engagement activities
• Community beautification plantings
• Outreach to community’s homeless
• Child finger printing
Volunteers are asked to bring non-perishable canned goods to raise awareness about
the issue of hunger, promote solutions to the underlying causes and show support to our
neighbors in need. Participants will receive a raffle ticket for each item donated. Several
prizes will be awarded.
We are committed to providing excellent public service and safety to all who live, work and play in our vibrant, tropical, historic community.
A portion of the event will focus on educating the public about the importance of
educational achievement, school attendance and will offer parenting tips, resource lists,
and referrals to community-based programs.
In addition, the event will offer information on the many services available in Miami
Beach, including: career services, HIV/STI testing, job training, counseling, youth
development programs, truancy prevention initiatives, educational support, health care
services, the IB education program, and food banks -- among others. The One Blood
Mobile will be on site encouraging blood donations.
Volunteers will each receive a free T-shirt courtesy of the City of Miami Beach, a free
water bottle courtesy of Coca-Cola, a delicious lunch from food sponsor Royles Gourmet
and snacks from RXBAR and ZICO. MB Suncare will provide free sunscreen for
attendees to remain safe from the sun. Prizes and giveaways are made possible by the
City of Miami Beach. Students in attendance will receive a free backpack while supplies
last. Teen Job Corps is providing crucial assistance in the planning and implementation
of the event.
The Miami Beach Service Partnership and Success University are funded by The
Children’s Trust. The Children's Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by
voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.
