A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, CONSENTING TO THE
APPOINTMENT OF MATT KENNY AS THE TOURISM AND
CULTURE DIRECTOR FOR THE TOURISM AND CULTURE
DEPARTMENT OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.
WHEREAS, on January 16, 2019, the Mayor and City Commission adopted Ordinance
No. 2019- 4230 , amending Chapter 2 of the City Code, entitled "Administration," by
amending Article IV, entitled "Officers and Employees," by amending Division I, entitled
"Generally," by amending Section 2-191, entitled "Enumeration of Organizational Units," to
divide the Tourism, Culture and Economic Development Department into two separate
departments, to be known as the Tourism and Culture Department and the Economic
Development Department; and
WHEREAS, the City Manager has appointed Matt Kenny as Tourism and Culture
Director for the City of Miami Beach's (the "City")Tourism and Culture Department; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kenny has over 10 years of professional and management experience
in various positions; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kenny's prior work experience includes serving as Director for
Community Agency, an international culture and art agency specializing in positioning
international brands; Supervisor for the Tourism and Culture Department of the City of Toronto,
where he successfully produced music, art, and other live performances and cultural projects
and events; and Account Manager for Brand and Live Entertainment, where he produced and
managed international touring productions with attendance of up to 20,000, which events were
held at the Air Canada Centre and other outdoor venues; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kenny's prior work experience (including participation in Nuit Blanche,
Vancouver Olympics, Pan Am Games, 100th Grey Cup, and New Year's Eve), aligns closely
with the responsibilities of the City's Tourism and Culture Department including Art in Public
Places, cultural grant programs, film and special event permitting, marketing and sponsorship
agreements, and event production; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 4.02(b) of the City Charter, the City Manager has the
power to appoint the directors of City departments, except for the Legal Department and the
City Clerk's Office, with the consent of the City Commission; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and the City Commission wish to consent to and confirm the
appointment of Matt Kenny as the Tourism and Culture Director for the Tourism and Culture
Department.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED THAT THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, hereby consent to and confirm the
appointment of Matt Kenny as the Tourism and Culture Director for the Tourism and Culture
Department of the City of Miami Beach.

SUBJECT:A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, CONSENTING TO THE APPOINTMENT
OF MATT KENNY THE DIRECTOR OF THE TOURISM AND CULTURE
DEPARTMENT FOR THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.
RECOMMENDATION
Pursuant to the requirements of Article IV, Section 4.02 of the City Charter, it is recommended
that the Mayor and the City Commission adopt the attached resolution consenting and
confirming Matt Kenny as the Director of the Tourism and Culture Department for the City of
Miami Beach.
ANALYSIS
Matt Kenny has over a decade of professional and management experience in various positions
related to tourism, special events and culture. He has worked in various capacities, managing
budgets for over 15 years and negotiating contracts with various parties, including AEG and Live
Nation.
With Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Matt produced and managed productions with
attendances ranging from fifty(50)to twenty-thousand (20,000) people at the Air Canada Center
and other venues.
While with the City of Toronto for over six(6)years as the Tourism and Culture Supervisor, Matt
cultivated various programs for the department, and successfully produced over 100 music, art,
and live performance cultural projects, programs and events for the fourth largest city in North
America. These programs also included public art spaces and music sector, while working with
various grant agencies. As the Tourism and Culture Supervisor, Matt worked with large
corporations to secure funding for City-produced events.
Matt worked with Community Agency, an international culture and art agency, specializing in
international brand positioning. At the Community Agency, Matt worked with world-renowned
brands, such as Bacardi, Grey Goose, and Casper, to name a few.
Mr. Kenny's prior work experience aligns closely with the responsibilities of the Tourism and

Culture department including art in public places, cultural grant programs, film and special event
permitting, marketing and sponsorship agreements, event production including participation on
Nuit Blanche, Vancouver Olympics, Pan Am Games, 100th Grey Cup, and New Year's Eve.
While recommending Mr. Kenny for this position, I would like to also recognize the hard work of
Heather Shaw who performed the role of Interim Director during this period. Ms. Shaws role has
been invaluable, with particular recognition to her efforts in the reopening of the new Miami
Beach Convention Center,Art Basel 2018 and associated special events, and New Year Eve.
CONCLUSION
Mr. Kenny's valuable prior work experience will assist him as the new Tourism and Culture
Director for the City of Miami Beach.
Pursuant to the requirements of Article IV, Section 4.02, of the City Charter, it is recommended
that the Mayor and City Commission adopt the resolution consenting and confirming Matt Kenny
as Director of the Human Resources Department.

art installations, programming international touring productions, as well as partnerships with

breaking arts and culture.
o Supervising RFP's for public bid, production order approvals (approvals required for any
purchase over$5,000), marketing and partnerships, budget allocations across multiple
departments, management of multiple work groups, preparing competitive bids for purchasing,
