ANALYSIS:
On April 25, 2003, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) National Aquatic
Branch announced the designation of July 13 - July 19, 2003 as "National Aquatic Week".
The Parks and Recreation Department is very active in providing aquatics related programs
and services to our patrons at the newly constructed Flamingo Park Pool and the Scott
Rakow Youth Center pool. Additionally, The Parks and Recreation Department will open
the Normandy Isle Pool Complex to th(~ public in the fall of 2003. The City's new Flamingo
swim complex complete with both an 8 lane lap pool and interactive playground has been
extremely well received by our customers and we anticipate the same positive reaction at
Normandy Isle Pool Complex, which will include a 4 lane swim pool and an interactive
pool/water playground when it opens.
The Parks and Recreation Department continues to regularly provide learn-to-swim
programs as part of its summer programs, as well as offers water safety and other aquatic
programming for the community throughout the year. It is anticipated that approximately
1,000 youths will receive learn-to-swim lessons and be issued the appropriate level of Red
Cross certification this summer alone.
Adopting this Resolution demonstrates the City's support to the National Recreation and
Parks Association's recognition of "National Aquatic Week" and the commitment to our
rejsid~M.e~KS in establishing and continuing such programs in the future.
