RESOLUTION NO. 80-16350
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, READOPTING, RECON-
FIRMING, AND AMENDING RESOLUTION NO. 80-16196,
OPPOSING THE DEVELOPMENT OF WATSON ISLAND AS
A COMMERCIAL AMUSEMENT PARK AND MEMORIALIZING
THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND
URBAN DEVELOPMENT TO DENY ANY HUD ACTION GRANT
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMERCIAL AMUSEMENT
PARK ON WATSON ISLAND.
WHEREAS, on February 20, 1980, the City Commission of the
City of Miami Beach, Florida, passed and adopted Resolution No.
80-16196, entitled :
"A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE DEVELOPMENT OF
WATSON ISLAND AS A COMMERCIAL AMUSEMENT
PARK AND MEMORIALIZING THE UNITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
TO DENY ANY HUD ACTION GRANT FOR THE DEVEL-
OPMENT OF A COMMERCIAL AMUSEMENT PARK ON
WATSON ISLAND."
and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami Beach
desires to reconfirm and re-enact said Resolution No. 80-16196, a
copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated as a part hereof;
and
WHEREAS, the Cabinet of the State of Florida is scheduled
to meet on the subject of the Development of Watson Island;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMIS-
SION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that Resolution No.
16196, opposing the development of Watson Island, be and the same
is reconfirmed and readopted ; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City Manager or his representa-
tive is hereby authorized to represent the City of Miami Beach at
the upcoming Florida Cabinet Meeting pertaining to the development
of Watson Island.

A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE DEVELOPMENT OF
WATSON ISLAND AS A COMMERCIAL AMUSEMENT
PARK AND MEMORIALIZING THE UNITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
TO DENY ANY HUD ACTION GRANT FOR THE
DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMERCIAL AMUSEMENT PARK
ON WATSON ISLAND.
WHEREAS, the City Commission of Miami Beach is deeply
concerned with projects of regional impact which might have an
adverse effect upon the quality of life of the citizens of Miami
Beach , and
WHEREAS , the City of Miami has commenced a project to
locate a commercial development and commercial amusement park on
Watson Island which Island is in Biscayne Bay and only a few hundred
feet from the City of Miami Beach, and
WHEREAS, the development of such a commercial amusement
park on Watson Island would impact adversely upon the residential
islands of Miami Beach located immediately adjacent to said Watson
Island by the creation of noise pollution and air pollution, and
WHEREAS , the proposed development would impact adversely
upon Biscayne Bay by virtue of the pollution of the waters around
the Watson Island which are only a few hundred feet from the waters
within the corporate limits of the City of Miami Beach, and
WHEREAS , the traffic patterns on the McArthur Causeway,
a principal entry way into the City of Miami Beach would be disturbed
and the increased traffic flow would create serious problems of
congestion and safety on the McArthur Causeway.
NOW THEREFORE , BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, that the City of Miami Beach is opposed
to the development of Watson Island as a commercial amusement park.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Commission of the
City of Miami Beach memorializes the United States Department of
Housing and Urban Development to deny any application for a HUD
action grant for the development of this improvident project.
