CITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission No. 15'I,ht:J& ~ From: Mayor David Dermer and Date: July 1, 2003 Members of the City com. miSSio~ Jorge M. Gonzalez ~ ~ City Manager FIRE DEPARTME . ANNUAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATISTICS To: Subject: Attached for your information is the Fire Department Emergency Response Statistics for calendar year 2002 and cumulative statistics for the past eleven (11) years. An analysis of the cumulative statistics reveal that since 1992 the annual number of Fire and Emergency Medical Calls have dropped from a high of 20,278 in 1993 to a low of 17,188 in 2002. Over the same time period, Emergency Medical Calls have declined from a high of 16,828 in 1993 to 14,730 in 2002. The average number of total calls per year from 1992 through 2001 are 19,320, the average number of EMS Calls are 15,703. This past year, the total of Fire and EMS Calls were 2,132 below average and EMS calls were 973 below average for the ten year period. In 1993, the highest emergency response year, the average daily workload was 55.6 calls for all emergency response units. This past year (2002), the average daily workload for all response units were 47.1 calls per day. The average daily workload per EMS Rescue Units has declined from 7.7 in 1993 to 6.7 in 2002. The trends continue to indicate a reduction in the total number of Fire and Rescue Calls. It is significant to note that our EMS transports have also declined from a high of 8,757 in 1998 to 7,775 in 2002. That decline has contributed to a reduction in EMS transportation revenue. Though the workload trends indicate a reduction in the total number of calls since the highest year in 1993; that reduction equates to an average of one (1) call per rescue unit each day. Current trends are not significant enough at this time to support any changes in current staffing levels or adding any additional emergency response units. However, we will closely monitor these statistics and will make appropriate modifications as warranted. If you have any questions or need any additional information please feel free to contact me.
