RESOLUTION 85-18057 RESOLUTION NO. 85-18057
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING ITS CONCERN AND
OBJECTION TO THE FLORIDA STATE PLAN POLICIES REGARDING
THE TOURISM INDUSTRY,
WHEREAS, 1984-85 Florida State Plan, paragraph 41, states that one of the
policies is to expand the economic benefits of tourism and to encourage a broader
distribution of tourism throughout the state, and to promote the attractiveness
of Florida with special emphasis placed on portions of the state not receiving
large numbers of tourists, and
WHEREAS the City of Miami Beach and several other cities in the state are
especially attractive to tourists and their economic vitality are presently
linked with tourism, and
WHEREAS the Florida State plan as stated above is designed not only to spend
State funds to promote new areas for tourism but is in effect creating competition
for present tourism destinations such as Miami Beach;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Commission of the City of Miami
Beach, Florida, expresses its grave concern and resentment that the state of Florida
is embarking upon a policy which not only fails to support continued tourism in
Miami Beach and other cities already involved in tourism, but specifically ear-
marks State funds to promote tourism in other areas which will be competitive
to Miami Beach and urges that this policy be revisited.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Honorable Robert Graham, Governor of the State of Florida, and appropriate
tourism officials in the State.
