A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, STRONGLY URGING THE
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES TO
TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO ENSURE THAT THE
SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE IN MIAMI BEACH IS NOT
CLOSED IN THE FUTURE.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA,
WHEREAS, as part of the President's proposed budget cuts, there is
currently a proposal to reduce the total number of Social Security Offices nationwide;
and,
WHEREAS, the Department of Health and Human Services is undertaking a
study of the Social Security Offices, in order to determine which offices will be
recommended for closure; and,
WHEREAS, 52% of the population of the City of Miami Beach is over the
age of 65; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach, due to the high concentration of
elderly population, as well as younger families in need of aid, feels it is essential that
the provision of services through the Miami Beach Social Security Office remain
intact; and,
WHEREAS, the closure of the Social Security Office in Miami Beach would
have a deleterious effect on the citizens of Miami Beach, particularly the elderly, who
cannot commute long distances for services; and
WHEREAS, the Social Security Office located at 355 Lincoln Road, Miami
Beach, Florida, has entered into a five-year lease from 1983 to 1988.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED, the City Commission of the
City of Miami Beach wishes to go on record as strongly objecting to any proposal
which includes the closing of the Social Security Office in Miami Beach, and urges the
Department of Health and Human Services to take every appropriate action to retain
this essential service office.
