SUBJECT: APPROPRIATION OF FUNDS FOR ADMINISTRATION OF LIGHT RAIL
TRANSIT FEASIBILITY STUDY
BACKGROUND
The State Legislature in its regular 1987 session approved $250,000 to fund a light rail
transit feasibility study for the City of Miami Beach. This fund was intended to be utilized
to hire consultants to analyze the engineering and planning feasibility of developing a light
rail transit system to link the expanded Miami Beach Convention Center with hotels located
on Miami Beach and in downtown Miami.
Whereas the City of Miami Beach anticipates receiving these funds in the near future and
also expects to receive a letter of no prejudice from the Florida Department of
Transportation allowing the City to charge approvable expenses to the project beginning on
August 1, 1987, it is necessary to establish an appropriation of funds to undertake the
feasibility study.
It is anticipated that these funds will be utilized to hire a planning and engineering
consultant and project coordinator, as well as additional costs related to undertaking a
feasibility study for a light rail transit system.
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION
The City Administration recommends appropriation of $250,000 from the State of Florida
Department of Transportation for the purpose of undertaking a feasibility study for a light
rail transit system within the City of Miami Beach.
