Lincoln Road Orchid Garden Proposal
The purpose of this proposal is to evolve the green spaces along Lincoln Road by installing
thousands of orchids on the trees between Meridian and Jefferson Avenues.Through The
Million Orchid Project and National Orchid Garden, Fairchild has been transforming
landscapes in Miami and illustrating the great potential of private business and botanic garden
partnerships to enhance public spaces. As experts in the field we have knowledge to access the
best sources of planting materials and experienced persons to see to the establishment of the
plants. This proposal gives a brief overview of our recommendations.
Recommendations:
A.Establish Irrigation System
I. Irrigation inspection should include inspection of sprinkler heads, timer mechanisms
at each zone.In addition, the system should be inspected visually for hot spots and
line breaks.
2. Repairs for items such as head replacement, broken lines, pumps or timers will be
need to be performed before plant procurements and installations, and with
coordination of the client,City of Miami Beach,Fairchild Garden staff, ect.
3. Long term maintenance agreement to ensure proper performance of irrigation
systems.
B. Procurement of Orchids and Installations
1. Orchids will be selected by Fairchild Orchid Biologist from varieties best suited to
the seasonal and environmental conditions, and their aesthetic appeal.
2. Plants will be sourced at wholesale or below retail prices from international and
domestic commercial orchid suppliers.
3. Orchids will be permanently attached on each palm and hardwood tree of suitable
size and with an irrigation line established(approx.60 trees total and 500-1000
orchids).Orchids will be installed out of the reach of the public using wire framing
and plastic zip ties.
C. Long-term Maintenance Needs
1. Fertilizing is required as recommend by the orchid biologist to maintain healthy
plants and prolong flowering.
2. Monthly service is recommended to prune, remove flowers that are fading or dead"
to prolong blooming time and to improve the general health and appearance of the
plants.
