This Letter to Commission is to provide an update on the status of our newly implemented Education
Initiative for reading interventionists and math interventionists during the 2018-19 school year.
At the April 2018 Commission Meeting, a Reading Interventionist program and Math Interventionist
program were approved for the 2018-2019 School Year_ to support youth at North Beach
Elementary, Fienberg Fisher K-8 Center, South Pointe Elementary, Biscayne Elementary, Nautilus
Middle School and Miami Beach Senior High School. By partnering with Florida International
University(FIU), students majoring in education were recruited to serve as reading interventionists
and students majoring in computer sciences, engineering, and mathematics were recruited to serve
as math interventionists. Education majors, supported by their FIU reading instructor and public-
school reading specialist, provided 828 hours of one-on-one reading instructions for youth struggling
with literacy, and computer science, engineering and math majors provided 493 hours of math
intervention for youth struggling with mathematics.
Because of this City funded program, 321 youth improved their reading fluency at each of the below
schools by an average 23 percent, and 40 youth improved math skills at Nautilus Middle School by
two (2) percent.
