A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING CITY MANAGER, ROB
PARKINS TO EXERT ALL NECESSARY EFFORTS TOWARD THE
FOLLOWING: HAVING THE VENETIAN WAY DESIGNATED AS A
HISTORIC SITE; MAINTAINING THE VENETIAN WAY AS A TWO-
LANE HIGHWAY WITH A TOLL STATION AND WITH THE INTEGRITY
OF ITS SIDEWALLS PRESERVED; ENLISTING THE CITY'S
LOBBYIST AND FLORIDA'S LEGISLATORS IN WASHINGTON D.C.
TO OBTAIN A CONGRESSIONAL EXEMPTION ALLOWING FOR
FEDERAL FIINDING FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE BRIDGES AND
REPAVING OF THE ROADS OF THE VENETIAN WAY WHILE
RETAINING THE TOLL AND TOLL STATION; WORKING WITH DADE
COUNTY OFFICIALS TO OBTAIN THESE OBJECTIVES; AND
KEEPING THE RESIDENTS OF THE VENETIAN ISLANDS INFORMED
REGARDING ALL DEVELOPMENTS PERTAINING TO THE
REPLACEMENT OF THE BRIDGES ON THE VENETIAN WAY.
WHEREAS, the Venetian Way bridges and roads are unique in
Dade County history as one of the first links between Miami Beach
and the mainland of Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the aesthetics and aquatic environment of the
Venetian Islands are an asset to the City of Miami Beach and all
of Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the Venetian Islands are comprised of five islands
with approximately five hundred valuable residences and two
islands of luxury condominiums, all of which are transversed by
the Venetian Way; and
WHEREAS, the character of the Venetian Islands with their
narrow and low bridges are aesthetically charming and desirable
and are part and parcel of the islands' residential quality of
life; and
WHEREAS, it is believed that preservation of the unique and
historic Venetian Way as a historic site will be highly
beneficial to the residents of the Venetian Islands, the citizens
of Miami Beach, Dade County and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, the presence of the toll booth on the west bridge
of the Venetian Way serves as a deterrent to crime and restricts
the amount of traffic and traffic speed through this fine
residential neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, the residents of the Venetian islands are willing,
if necessary, to pay an increased toll charge to maintain the
toll booth, 2-lane format, slow speed, bike path and low bridge
design; and
WHEREAS, the age and deteriorating conditions of the
Venetian Way bridges necessitate their replacement; and
WHEREAS, Dade County is attempting to obtain federal funding
for replacement of the bridges and repaving of the roads of the
Venetian Way; and
WHEREAS, federal funding is not available for replacement of
bridges or construction on roads where a toll is charged for
public usage without a congressional exemption.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA THAT: the City Manager, Rob
Parkins is hereby directed to exert all necessary efforts toward
the following: having the Venetian Way designated as a historic
site; maintaining the Venetian Way as a two-lane highway and with
toll station and with the integrity of its sidewalls preserved;
enlisting the City's lobbyist and Florida's legislators in
Washington D.C. to obtain a congressional exemption allowing for
federal funding for replacement of the bridges and repaving of
the roads of the Venetian Way while retaining the toll and toll
station; working with Dade County officials to obtain these
objectives; and keeping the Venetian Islands residents informed
on all developments pertaining to the replacement of the bridges
on the Venetian Way.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 20th day of ,aril , 1988.
