PROPOSED AMENDED EE SCHEDULE FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT EMERGENCY
SUBJECT: MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION (RESOLUTION NO. 85-17994)
BACKGROUND
The Fire Department presently provides medical
transportation to persons requiring BLS and ALS transports
on an as-needed basis at a flat rate of $75. 00 per
transport (established by Resolution No . 85-17994 ,
February, 1985) .
In an effort to provide the highest quality emergency
medical treatment, the Fire Department has imposed internal
procedures that have significantly increased fire rescue
transports. In order to offset the increased budgetary
costs and enable the Fire Department to continue to provide
top quality emergency medical treatment, a two-tiered
revised schedule has been proposed. The proposed increase
is estimated to produce a revenue of $27 , 570 . 00 per month.
OBSERVATION
The Fire Department has experienced increased budgetary
costs in providing ALS and BLS transport service, both for
medical supplies and increased vehicle maintenance costs.
The implementation of the increased rates would be
consistent with the rate structures of other providers which
have already enacted increased fee schedules, i. e. Dade
County and private ambulance companies.
No individual would be denied fire rescue transport services
due to an inability to pay for such services.
The proposed fee increase would provide needed revenue to
the Fire Department to offset increased budgetary costs and
would place the City within a rate structure comparable to
surrounding municipalities.
The proposed fee schedule increase has been reviewed by the
Health Advisory Board and has been unanimously endorsed.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that Resolution No. 85-17994 (Schedule of
Fire Rescue Transport Fees for Fire Department) be amended
to increase the present $75. 00 Fire Rescue transport fee to
a two-tiered schedule of $90. 00 for BLS transport and
$150. 00 for ALS transport.
