SUBJECT: SYMPHONY HALL/PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
As you know, a Trust has been established by Metropolitan Dade County Mayor Steve Clark
to review the overall requirements of cultural programming within Dade County. Miami
Beach is a participant in this new trust. Certainly, a review of cultural programming
throughout the Metropolitan Dade County area is in order, and we recognize the need to
ensure that coordinated programming occurs. •
•
In the meantime, however, prominent members of the Miami Beach community have
expressed a desire to press forward with at least the construction of an outstanding
symphony hall incorporating approximately 2,200 seats. These members of our community
have expressed a very strong belief that the symphony hail would most logically be located
where our two-story parking garage currently exists on the south side of 17th Street at
Washington Avenue.
Because of the strong private-sector interest in beginning this project as quickly as possible,
and because of the logical relationship that a symphony hall would have with our current
fine cultural programming venues, it would be appropriate for the City to state its position
of support to the extent that we would contribute land, in the area described above, for this
purpose.
Therefore, a Resolution of support is recommended for approval.
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION:
A Resolution in support of the donation of the required land at the south corner of
17th Street and Washington Avenue for the purpose of constructing a new symphony hall be
approved.
