Resolution 2019-30875 RESOLUTION NO. 2019-30875 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE FINANCE AND CITYWIDE PROJECTS COMMITTEE AT ITS JUNE 28, 2019 MEETING TO PROVIDE FUNDING NOT IN EXCESS OF $5,000.00 TO ALLOW THE MIAMI BEACH YOUTH COMMISSION MEMBERS TO ANNUALY ATTEND THE LEGISLATIVE ACTION DAYS YOUTH COUNCIL PROGRAM. WHEREAS, at its May 21, 2019 meeting, the Miami Beach Youth Commission passed a motion, requesting the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach (the "City") to allocate a budget in the amount of$5,000.00 to allow the Youth Commission to participate in the Legislative Action Days Youth Council program, in order to become educated about city government, and improve its ability to represent and articulate the needs of youth within the Miami Beach community; and WHEREAS, the two-day program takes place in Tallahassee, Florida, to give the youth an opportunity to learn more about municipal government at Florida's capital city and includes tours of the Florida Supreme Court, the Governor's mansion, and the Florida State Capitol; and WHEREAS, the purpose of the Miami Beach Youth Commission is to provide the youth of Miami Beach with a vehicle to learn about government, participate in the process of city government, represent and articulate the needs of youth in the City, and provide recommendations to the Mayor and City Commissioners on issues and programs affecting the youth and teen population in the City; and WHEREAS, there are currently approximately 11,000 youths under the age of 18 residing in the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, at its June 28, 2019 meeting, the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee supported the Youth Commission's May 21, 2019 motion and recommended that the City allocate funding of no more than $5,000.00 to allow the seven (7)Youth Commissioners to annually attend the Legislative Action Days Youth Council program in Tallahassee. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept the recommendation of the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee at its June 28, 2019 meeting to provide funding not in excess of $5,000.00 to allow the Miami Beach Youth Commission members to annually attend the Legislative Action Days Youth Council Program. ANALYSIS At the May 21, 2019 Youth Commission meeting, the following motion was made: The Youth Commission requests the Miami Beach Mayor and Commission allocate the budget of $5,000 for the Youth Commission to participate in the Legislative Action Days Youth Council program to become educated about City government along with represent and articulate the needs of youth within the Miami Beach community. Members of the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee supported the Youth Commission request for $5,000 at the June 2019 meeting to allow the seven (7) youth commissioners to attend the Florida League of Cities Legislative Action Days in Tallahassee each year. The two-day program, usually in January,tours Tallahassee and gives youth an opportunity to learn more about municipal government at Florida's capital city. Youth will also tour the supreme court, governor's mansion, visit the Florida Capitol and more. CONCLUSION The purpose of the Miami Beach Youth Commission is to provide the youth of Miami Beach with a vehicle to learn about government, participate in the process of City government, represent and articulate the needs of youth in the City, and provide recommendations to the Mayor and City Commissioners on issues and programs affecting the youth and teen population in the City.
