97-22431 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 97-22431 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CI1Y OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RETROACTIVELY APPROVING, THE EXTENSION OF THE VICTIMS OF CRIME ACT (VOCA) GRANT TO SEPTEMBER 30, 1997, AND THE BUDGETING AND EXPENDITURE OF $10,031.45 IN GRANT AND MATCHING FUNDS FOR THE FUNDING OF TH'~ SALARY AND BENEFITS OF ONE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COUNSELOR WHEREAS, the City, through the Police Department, was awarded a grant by the Sta e of Florida, under the auspices of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), for the purpose offunding the salary and benefits of one Domestic Violence Counselor; and WHEREAS, the grant period is for one year, commencing on June 1, 1996, and encinl': on June 30, 1997 ; and WHEREAS, as the grant period is ending, the State of Florida has proposed extendi1g and continue to fund the grant to September 30, 1997; and WHEREAS, the total funds for the grant extension are $10,031.45, with the State of Florida funding $8,025,16 and the City providing matching funds in the amount of$2,006.29, from the Police Confiscations Account; and WHEREAS, these funds will be used to pay the salary and benefits of one Domestic Violence Counselor; and WHEREAS, the Administration would request that the Mayor and City Commission retroactively approve said extension, as the State of Florida required that the City notify its intention to extend the grant by June 10, 1997. NOW THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and Ci:y Commission herein retroactively approves the extension of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant to September 30, 1997, and the budgeting and expenditure of $1 0,031.45 in grant and matching funds for the funding of the salary and benefits of one Do estic Violence Counselor. TO: FROM: ADMINISTRA TION RECOMMENDATION Approve the Resolution. BACKGROUND The Police Department was awarded a grant under the auspices Florida Victims of Crim~ hct (VOCA). The grant was awarded on June 1, 1996 and was to end on June 30, 1997. The St lte notified the Police Department that it was proposing an extension of the grant until Septembl~r ::0, 1997 and was willing to provide an additional $8,025.16 in grant funds. The State required that the City accept or decline the extension by June 10, 1997. As such, we lre seeking retroactive approval to extend this grant until September 30, 1997. The State will provide $8,025.16 in new funds which the City will match with $2,006.29 from he Police Confiscations Account, for a total of $1 0,031.45. The funds will be used to pay for the salary and benefits of one Domestic Violence Coullse or assigned to the Police Department. CONCLUSION Extension of the grant will enable the Police Department to continue to provide this valuable s(~rv ce to~ community.
