A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING FLORIDA
GOVERNOR LAWTON CHILES TO CALL THE FLORIDA
LEGISLATURE INTO SPECIAL SESSION IMMEDIATELY
TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE FUNDING FOR PUBLIC
SCHOOLS.
WHEREAS, public education forms the bedrock of democracy; and
WHEREAS, perhaps the most vital contribution of the states to
the strength of the union is their education of the nation' s
populace; and
WHEREAS, the most important responsibility of state government
is to provide adequate funding for public education; and
WHEREAS, Florida ' s traditionally dismal record has become even
worse as the state has reduced its spending on public education by
10 percent in the past decade (a decade in which Florida has
sustained tremendous growth) ; and
WHEREAS, Dade County Public Schools alone has suffered $200
million in budget cuts in little more than a year; and
WHEREAS, the state has threatened Dade County' s Schools with
another $43 million shortfall this year; and
WHEREAS, the children of Dade County have suffered with the
elimination of several important programs; and
WHEREAS, the issue must be resolved now, before too many more
children lose too many years of learning forever.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City Commission urges
Florida Governor Lawton Chiles to call the Florida Legislature into
session immediately to provide adequate funding for public schools.
