SUBJECT: Martin Luther King Day
Please place on next agenda a resolution to declare Martin Luther King Day a full
holiday for the City of Miami Beach; beginning next January 20, 1992.
It is difficult for me to understand how this City can do otherwise. We are under
national boycott by a Black leadership group; we are subjects of a U.S. Justice
Department suit involving discrimination against Hispanics and Blacks, we are
currently involved in settling claims of discrimination against Jewish lifeguards, and
a host of other claims and lawsuits are pending charging discrimination.
All the above suggest some insensitivity on our part which is only underlined by a
failure to properly respect Martin Luther King Day. Despite the increased costs to the
City for holiday pay for our basic police, fire and maintenance personnel, it is
essential that the City moves forward in this area.
